Beginner Review and Match-Reading Workshop

Test beginner market-reading skills with fictional basketball, football, tennis and player-prop cases, calculation tasks and a detailed answer key.

Lesson 20 – Beginner Review and Match-Reading Workshop

Learning goals and lesson guide

**Estimated reading time:** 8 min read.

**Level:** Beginner capstone. **Study time:** Allow 40–50 minutes, including the answer review. **Prerequisites:** The beginner lessons on markets, odds, rules, sources, statistics and paper records. Every event, price, promotion and result in this workshop is fictional.

The beginner course ends with a practical test of reading and reasoning. The goal is not to select the most winners. It is to identify exactly what a market asks, calculate returns correctly, preserve uncertainty and recognise when missing information prevents a sound answer.

Complete the tasks before reading the answer key. You may use a calculator and your earlier notes. Write the assumptions you use. If the supplied information is insufficient, say what is missing rather than inventing it. That is part of a successful answer.

## 1. Prepare the paper study

Create a worksheet labelled “Fictional beginner workshop — no real-money transactions.” Use PHP 100 as the imaginary stake for each calculation unless another amount is stated. This number is a teaching unit, not a spending recommendation.

Set aside separate areas for pre-event information, post-event results and reflections. Do not revise the original conditions after seeing an outcome. Record the market name, counting period, line, price and special rule before doing arithmetic.

You will study basketball, football, tennis and a player prop, then inspect a promotional example and a source-checking problem. The mixture tests whether you can transfer the same careful reading habits between sports without assuming their rules are identical.

## 2. Case A — Basketball margin and total

Harbour faces Valley in a fictional completed game. The supplied markets explicitly include overtime and use ordinary two-way settlement. You record Harbour minus 4.5 at 1.90 and under 205.5 total points at 1.85 as two separate paper examples.

The final score is Harbour 104, Valley 101. Calculate the winner, winning margin and combined total. Then settle each paper example and calculate its return and net result. Keep the official winner separate from the handicap outcome.

Next, change only the hypothetical handicap to Harbour minus 3 with a push rule. Explain how settlement changes without altering the score. Finally, state why a first-half total could not be settled from this final score alone.

## 3. Case B — Football result and qualification

Riverside and Hill United are level 1–1 after normal time, including stoppage time. They remain level after extra time, and Hill United advances through a shoot-out. The supplied normal-time markets exclude extra time and shoot-out goals.

Determine the outcome of Riverside normal-time winner, normal-time draw, both teams to score and over 2.5 goals. Separately identify the successful qualification selection. Explain why “Hill United won on penalties” cannot simply replace every result field with a Hill United normal-time win.

For a paper PHP 100 draw selection at 3.10, calculate total return and net profit. For a separate Riverside draw-no-bet example with ordinary draw-refund terms, calculate the net result. Do not combine these hypothetical examples into an actual transaction.

## 4. Case C — Tennis units

Player A wins a standard completed best-of-three match 0–6, 6–4, 6–4. There is no retirement or unusual deciding-set format in this case. Count each player's games, combined games and set wins.

Settle Player A match winner, Player A minus 2.5 games and over 25.5 total games under the supplied completed-match definitions. Then explain why the match winner need not win more games overall.

Now change the scenario: play stops because of retirement at 6–4, 2–1. No retirement terms are supplied. Write what additional information you need before settling a match-winner or total-games selection. Do not treat the current score as a normally completed result.

## 5. Case D — Player participation and a combined statistic

A fictional basketball player records 18 points, seven rebounds and four assists. The paper prop is over 28.5 points, rebounds and assists, full game including overtime. The supplied participation rule requires any official playing time, and that condition was met.

Calculate the combined statistic and settle the example. At odds of 1.80 on PHP 100, calculate return and net profit if it succeeds. Then describe how your answer would change if the player never entered and the supplied rule explicitly voided non-participants.

A second source later corrects one assist downward. For this exercise, assume the applicable correction policy uses that official revision. Recalculate the statistic and settlement, preserving the original record and adding a correction note.

## 6. Case E — Timing and promotional wording

A fictional event is scheduled for 20:30 UTC on 12 July. Convert it to Philippine time with the date. An old social screenshot calls it “tonight” but has no date. Explain why the complete scheduled timestamp is stronger evidence for a local fixture note.

Separately, inspect an invented offer: PHP 500 deposit, PHP 250 bonus, eight-times bonus turnover requirement and 50% contribution for the chosen eligible activity. Calculate the credited-turnover target and the raw stakes needed if all activity contributes at that rate. Explain why neither number predicts a guaranteed withdrawal amount.

If meeting the promotion would require activity beyond the learner's prewritten limit, write the appropriate conclusion. The arithmetic does not override that boundary.

## 7. Case F — Evidence and a decision to skip

A fan account claims a starting player is injured. A team post from yesterday says the player will be assessed, but no current lineup is available. Your friend asks for a confident player-points prediction.

Write a short response separating the fan claim, the team's confirmed statement and what remains unknown. Identify what you would check next. Include a reason to leave the prop out of the paper study if the required information cannot be verified.

Then consider a model-free claim that a team “must win because it lost four in a row.” Explain why the streak alone does not establish the next result. You do not need to predict the opposite outcome to reject an unsupported certainty.

## 8. Worked answer key

### Basketball

Harbour wins by three, and the combined total is 205. Harbour minus 4.5 loses, returning zero and producing minus PHP 100. Under 205.5 wins, returning PHP 185 and producing plus PHP 85. At Harbour minus 3 with a push rule, the stake returns and net result is zero. The final score does not reveal first-half scoring, so that separate market needs its own period result.

### Football

The normal-time result is a draw. Riverside normal-time winner loses; draw and both teams to score succeed; over 2.5 loses because two goals count. Hill United qualifies. The PHP 100 draw at 3.10 returns PHP 310, with PHP 210 profit. Riverside draw no bet returns PHP 100 and produces zero net. Qualification and normal-time result are different questions.

### Tennis

A wins 12 games, B wins 14 and the combined total is 26. A wins two sets to one. A match winner succeeds, A minus 2.5 games fails and over 25.5 games succeeds. Unequal set margins explain the different game total. In the retirement scenario, market-specific retirement conditions and official status are required; the supplied partial score alone is insufficient.

### Player prop

The initial combined statistic is 29, which exceeds 28.5. The example returns PHP 180 and earns PHP 80 net. Non-participation under the supplied void rule returns the stake for zero net. The assist correction reduces the total to 28, so the over fails under the exercise's stated correction policy. Append the changed figure and resulting settlement rather than hiding the original entry.

### Timing and promotion

20:30 UTC on 12 July becomes 04:30 PHT on 13 July. The explicit timezone and date prevent the ambiguity of “tonight.” The bonus requirement is PHP 250 × 8 = PHP 2,000 credited turnover. At 50% contribution, PHP 4,000 raw stakes would be needed, assuming all other conditions are satisfied. Losses and restrictions mean no withdrawal amount is guaranteed. A promotion should not override a prewritten limit.

### Evidence

The team confirmed an assessment, not a diagnosis or final absence. The fan claim remains unverified. Check the latest official update and event-specific lineup; if unavailable, label participation unresolved and skip the prop exercise. Four losses alone do not establish that a win is due. New evidence about the next event is needed.

## 9. Review your work as a learner

Mark each calculation correct, incorrect or unresolved for a justified reason. Treat return/profit confusion, wrong counting periods and invented rules as concepts to revisit. A correctly identified information gap deserves credit because it prevents a false conclusion.

As an internal study benchmark, aim to explain at least four out of every five checks correctly before moving on. This is a course-design suggestion, not an accredited qualification. Rework missed examples with new fictional numbers until the method is clear.

The intermediate level begins with expected value, variance and sample size. Keep the same habits: define the question, preserve timestamps, state assumptions and distinguish a calculation from a guaranteed outcome.
