Learning Miami’s principles comes first
Giannis Antetokounmpo identified learning Miami’s playing principles as his biggest early challenge at Heat training camp in Boca Raton, Florida, on September 30, 2026. After 13 seasons with Milwaukee, he is adapting to different responsibilities on both ends of the floor.
Speaking to reporters after practice, Antetokounmpo said he wants to understand the system thoroughly and welcomes frequent feedback from the coaching staff. ClutchPoints reporter Zachary Weinberger reported the comments from camp, where the forward described an enjoyable and competitive opening two days.
His arrival also gives coach Erik Spoelstra the task of developing a frontcourt partnership with Bam Adebayo. Spoelstra described seeing the pair together at the first practice as “surreal,” according to Miami Herald reporter Anthony Chiang, as cited by Hoops Wire. Adebayo welcomed the opportunity to improve by practicing against his new teammate.
Antetokounmpo has been working in individual drills against Adebayo and other Miami big men. He said those sessions help sharpen skills alongside the team work required in larger practice groups.
The early comments put the emphasis on learning assignments and building familiarity. Spoelstra’s decisions on how to arrange the offense around the two forwards remain part of the team’s preparation, with training camp providing the first sustained opportunity to test their fit together.
