Newell’s late finish helps Atlanta hold off Oklahoma City
The Atlanta Hawks defeated the Oklahoma City Thunder 113–110 in Atlanta on Monday, October 12, extending their preseason winning streak to three games. The result was confirmed on Tuesday, October 13, Philippine time.
Jock Landale led Atlanta with 17 points, while Bennett Stirtz scored a game-high 26 for Oklahoma City. Landale converted seven of his 11 field-goal attempts, including one of three from beyond the arc.
Atlanta led 56–49 at halftime, but Oklahoma City recovered in the third quarter to send the teams into the fourth tied at 79. The Hawks then outscored the Thunder 34–31 in the closing period.
Asa Newell provided an important late basket by gathering his own miss and finishing with a putback dunk. He collected 10 rebounds in the win. Jalen Wilson added 12 points and eight rebounds in 30 minutes, with all of his scoring coming from three-point range.
Coach Quin Snyder used 12 players, with 10 receiving at least 10 minutes, according to Atlanta News First. The distribution reflected a preseason game that gave the available group an extended opportunity to contribute. Both teams were missing major rotation players.
This was Atlanta’s fourth preseason outing. The result continued a successful run of exhibition games, though the reduced lineups make it an incomplete measure of how the teams will compare during the regular season.
The Hawks are scheduled to finish their preseason schedule against Dallas on Friday, October 16, in the United States.
