Charlotte follows its trade with a roster cut
The Charlotte Hornets waived guard Rob Dillingham on Monday, September 28, shortly after acquiring him from the Chicago Bulls in the Buddy Hield trade. The team’s public-relations account confirmed the roster move, according to ClutchPoints.
Charlotte had sent Hield and cash to Chicago in the deal announced over the weekend. Dillingham’s subsequent release means the incoming guard will not remain on the Hornets’ camp roster under that contract. The trade and the waiver are separate moves, even though they happened in quick succession.
Dillingham, 21, averaged 9.6 points and 2.8 assists across 30 appearances for Chicago last season, according to RealGM. The same report said the Hield transaction created a $9.6 million trade exception for Charlotte. That exception is a roster-building mechanism, rather than another player received in the deal.
The sequence follows Charlotte’s earlier transaction with Atlanta that brought Hield to the Hornets as Dorian Finney-Smith moved to the Hawks. Hield’s stay in Charlotte therefore ended before the start of the new season.
Dillingham’s next destination was not established in the reports reviewed for this update. Any claim that he has joined another club would require a separate roster announcement.
