Curry links his contract choice to another title push
Stephen Curry said at Golden State’s September 28 Media Day that winning another championship and completing his career with the Warriors shaped his decision to accept less than the maximum available in his new contract.
The two-year extension, agreed the previous Friday, was reported at $116 million. That is roughly $20 million below the maximum he could have received. Curry presented the decision as a way to help the team retain room to improve while keeping his own future in Golden State.
General manager Mike Dunleavy said the agreement gives the organization more flexibility, according to the Associated Press. Neither that explanation nor Curry’s comments amount to an announcement of a particular trade or signing.
The new development is Curry’s account of the decision, following the extension announcement already made public. His focus at Media Day remained on competing with the Warriors rather than naming a future roster move.
Golden State now enters preseason preparation with its franchise player’s contract resolved. How the club uses the flexibility Curry described will depend on subsequent personnel decisions.
