Alex Eala Beats Diane Parry to Reach Ningbo Round of 16

Seven-game run gives Eala control in Ningbo

Alex Eala moved into the Ningbo Open round of 16 with a 6–3, 6–1 victory over France’s Diane Parry on Monday, October 19. The Filipino completed the first-round match at the WTA 500 event in China in one hour and 17 minutes.

The win ended a three-match losing streak and gave the 21-year-old her 34th tour-level victory of 2026, according to the WTA. She had entered the season with 15 tour-level wins across her career, making the latest result another marker of her increased activity and success on the main tour.

The players traded early breaks before Eala took control from 3–3 in the first set. She won seven consecutive games, securing the opener and building a 4–0 lead in the second. Parry got one game back before Eala closed out the match.

Consistency separated the players. The WTA recorded 12 winners and nine unforced errors for Eala, compared with 11 winners and 25 unforced errors for Parry. Eala therefore produced a similar number of outright winners while making substantially fewer mistakes.

The result provides a response to her opening-match defeats in Singapore and Wuhan. GMA News reported before the Ningbo match that Eala had also represented the Philippines at the Asian Games during the Asian swing, earning a bronze medal.

Eala’s next opponent will be the winner of the first-round meeting between sixth seed Diana Shnaider and qualifier Yulia Putintseva. That match was still listed as upcoming by the WTA when this article was checked on October 20 in Philippine time.

Ningbo is being played on outdoor hard courts from October 19 to 25. Eala has secured a place in the last 16; a quarterfinal berth still depends on winning her next match.
