Anthony Black Begins Magic Camp With Minor Ankle Sprain

Orlando takes a cautious approach with its young guard

Orlando Magic guard Anthony Black is day to day after suffering a minor ankle sprain during voluntary workouts before training camp. Coach Sean Sweeney outlined the injury on September 30, according to Orlando Sentinel reporter Jason Beede.

The coach described Orlando’s approach as precautionary. The available update did not set a fixed return date or establish that Black would miss regular-season games. His involvement will depend on how the ankle responds as camp progresses.

Black is coming off a season in which he averaged 15.0 points, 3.8 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 1.4 steals. He appeared in 64 regular-season games, starting 40, and shot 44.7 percent from the field.

Those numbers explain why his preparation matters to Orlando. The guard had taken on a larger role, and camp gives the Magic time to build combinations and install Sweeney’s approach before competitive games begin.

The ankle issue also arrives as Orlando considers Black’s longer-term future. The Sentinel reported that the club hopes to reach an extension with him, but the injury update did not announce a completed agreement.

For now, the immediate development remains a minor sprain and a day-to-day assessment. A later practice update will offer a clearer indication of his readiness.
