Dru Smith Calf Injury Disrupts Heat Training Camp

Dru Smith faces a spell on the sidelines after a right calf strain at Heat camp, with his readiness for the regular-season opener still uncertain.

Dru Smith Faces Weeks Out After Calf Strain at Heat Camp

Miami loses a guard during its opening week of practice

Miami Heat guard Dru Smith is expected to miss multiple weeks after suffering a right calf strain during training camp. The injury occurred late in Wednesday’s practice, September 30, and was reported by the Miami Herald on October 1.

The setback interrupts Smith’s preparation at a time when Miami is building its guard rotation. The Sun Sentinel also reported that the Heat announced a multiple-week absence, bringing the team’s younger point-guard options into closer focus.

The Miami Herald described the expected recovery as a couple of weeks. That estimate leaves Smith’s availability for the start of the regular season uncertain rather than establishing that he will definitely miss the opener.

Miami is scheduled to begin its regular season against the Minnesota Timberwolves at Kaseya Center on October 21. The interval between the injury and that game gives Smith time to recover, but the projected timeline is not medical clearance.

For now, the confirmed development is the calf strain and the interruption to camp. A subsequent team update will be needed to establish when Smith can resume full participation and whether he is available for games.
