Communication becomes an early priority in Philadelphia
Jaylen Brown is learning a new defensive vocabulary as he settles into Philadelphia 76ers training camp. Speaking after practice on October 1, Brown said familiar basketball terms can describe different coverages with the Sixers than they did during his years in Boston.
The adjustment makes clear communication a practical priority. Brown emphasized identifying the coverage correctly and ensuring teammates leave huddles with the same understanding of their responsibilities, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.
Coach Nick Nurse used the first two practices heavily for defense and scrimmaging before beginning to introduce offensive sets on Thursday. Brown also spent time working with younger players, including Justin Edwards and Rayan Rupert.
Off the court, Brown credited Tyrese Maxey with helping him feel welcome. Maxey has taken an active role in accommodating Philadelphia’s newcomers while the reshaped roster gets acquainted.
Brown’s comments underline the work still taking place behind the Sixers’ headline additions. Camp is giving the group time to establish shared defensive habits before those decisions must be made at game speed.
