An overseas move follows a crowded NBA offseason
D’Angelo Russell has agreed to join the Shanghai Sharks of the Chinese Basketball Association after his release by the Memphis Grizzlies. The move was announced on September 30, according to reporting carried by RealGM and The Athletic.
Russell, 30, had arrived in Memphis through an offseason trade before the Grizzlies waived him as they reduced their roster. The Shanghai agreement takes him into a new league following several changes of team over the last two NBA seasons.
The guard earned his lone NBA All-Star selection with Brooklyn in 2019. He later returned to the Nets after his second spell with the Los Angeles Lakers, then signed with Dallas in 2025. His subsequent move to Washington did not produce a game appearance before Memphis acquired him.
Shanghai offers a different competitive setting for a player whose NBA career has included both starting responsibilities and more limited roles. The reports reviewed for this article did not establish the value or duration of his new contract.
The confirmed development concerns Russell’s next team. It does not amount to an announcement that he has retired from basketball or permanently ruled out a future NBA return.
