Rybakina Retains Ningbo Title With Straight-Sets Win Over Fernandez

Rybakina’s serve holds firm in Ningbo final

Elena Rybakina retained the Ningbo Open title by defeating Leylah Fernandez 6–2, 6–2 in China on Sunday, October 25. The world No. 1 completed the final in one hour and 16 minutes to collect her fourth title of the 2026 season.

Rybakina broke Fernandez twice in each set and did not lose her own serve. That combination gave her control of both sets and prevented the Canadian from turning individual return opportunities into a sustained comeback.

The victory added to Rybakina's Australian Open, Stuttgart and US Open titles this season. According to the WTA, Ningbo was the 15th tour-level singles title of her career and her seventh at WTA 500 level.

Fernandez had reached the final after surviving three three-set matches earlier in the tournament. The last match presented a different problem: Rybakina's serve allowed the top seed to keep points on her own terms and protect the breaks she had earned.

For Fernandez, the runner-up finish still represented a productive week. Tennis Canada noted that reaching the final of the WTA 500 event earned her more ranking points than winning a WTA 250 title would have done. She had chosen Ningbo rather than returning to defend her Osaka crown.

Rybakina's result extended her winning run at Ningbo to eight matches across two appearances. It also strengthened a season already marked by success on different surfaces, with the Stuttgart clay title sitting alongside her hard-court victories.

The final's clearest statistical distinction was the absence of a break against the champion. Fernandez needed a way into Rybakina's service games to change the match, but four breaks in the opposite direction and eight consecutive holds left the defending champion with a straightforward scoreline.
