Tatum Scores 40 and Beats Nets With Overtime Buzzer-Beater

Boston survives Brown’s late three and wins at the final horn

Jayson Tatum scored 40 points and hit a jumper as overtime expired to give the Boston Celtics a 125–124 victory over the Brooklyn Nets at TD Garden on Tuesday, October 27. The game finished on October 28 in the Philippines and extended Boston’s winning streak to three.

The Celtics had only 2.3 seconds to work with when they regained possession trailing 124–123. Tatum received the inbound pass from Derrick White and converted the deciding shot, overturning a deficit that Brooklyn had protected until the last possession.

The Nets had already produced one escape. Rookie Mikel Brown Jr. made a three-pointer with one second remaining in regulation to erase Boston’s 117–114 lead and force overtime. His shot gave Brooklyn another opportunity to secure its first victory of the season, but Tatum delivered the final response.

According to the Field Level Media report carried by GMA News, Tatum made a career-high 18 free throws on 22 attempts. Paul George supported him with 20 points, seven rebounds and seven assists. Michael Porter Jr. led Brooklyn with 27 points and 12 rebounds, while Julius Randle contributed 24 points and nine rebounds.

Boston’s shooting changed sharply after halftime. The Celtics made only two of 16 three-point attempts before the break and trailed 61–56, then connected on eight threes in the third quarter to move ahead 86–82. Neither that recovery nor an eight-point fourth-quarter lead prevented the game from reaching an extra period.

Boston improved to 3–1, while Brooklyn fell to 0–4. NBC Sports Boston reported that the Celtics’ next game is an NBA Cup group-stage meeting with Chicago on Friday, October 30.
