LeBron Took the Minimum and His Sixers Test Starts Against the Knicks

Philadelphia’s talent faces an immediate test of fit

LeBron James and the Philadelphia 76ers are scheduled to open the 2026–27 regular season against the defending champion New York Knicks on October 20 at Madison Square Garden. For Philippine audiences, the game falls on October 21. The matchup brings James’ new team directly into New York’s championship celebration and gives Philadelphia an early test of how its assembled talent works together.

James joined the Sixers on a reported two-year, $8 million minimum contract. Philadelphia confirmed his signing in July, although the team’s announcement did not disclose the financial terms. His arrival alongside Jaylen Brown added two established stars to a roster already featuring Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey and VJ Edgecombe.

The distinction between the contract and the basketball challenge matters. Taking a smaller salary helped make the move possible; it does not settle how Philadelphia will allocate possession, close games or defend through long stretches. Those questions begin receiving regular-season answers against a team that has already completed a championship run.

James’ October 8 preseason debut offered an initial look at the arrangement. He finished with 10 points, four rebounds and five assists in 18 minutes during a 114–108 loss to Brooklyn, starting alongside Embiid, Brown, Maxey and Edgecombe. That lineup establishes the talent available, but one exhibition does not establish its best combinations or rotation patterns.

From a tactical perspective, the appeal is having several players capable of initiating offense. Philadelphia could avoid asking one creator to manufacture every difficult possession. The corresponding challenge is maintaining movement and useful spacing when those players share the floor. Having several capable decision-makers only helps if their decisions connect.

Minutes distribution will be another useful measure. Staggering the leading players could keep a creator on court with reserve units, while shared minutes should reveal which actions produce clean shots without slowing the offense. These are areas to watch, rather than conclusions already demonstrated by the preseason.

James enters his 24th NBA season at 41. The opener will provide a competitive starting point for the new group, not a verdict on its championship chances. Philadelphia then returns home to face Cleveland on October 22. The first task is to establish a repeatable way of playing, beginning against the Knicks on a night when New York will celebrate what it has already won.
