Gomez converts as Liverpool survive a 16-kick shootout

Liverpool reached the Carabao Cup quarter-finals by beating Chelsea 6–5 on penalties after a 1–1 draw at Anfield on Wednesday, October 28. Joe Gomez converted Liverpool’s final kick before Wesley Fofana missed for Chelsea, settling a shootout that required 16 attempts.

Both regulation-time goals came from penalties late in the first half. Morgan Rogers put Chelsea in front, and Cody Gakpo responded shortly afterwards to restore the score to 1–1. Neither side added a goal before the match went to spot-kicks.

Liverpool had made seven changes to their starting team, according to the match report from This Is Anfield. The contest remained level through the second half despite further substitutions, leaving both teams dependent on their penalty takers and goalkeepers.

The shootout gave each side opportunities to finish the tie. Ryan Gravenberch’s attempt was saved by Mike Penders, but Giorgi Mamardashvili then denied Emanuel Emegha when Chelsea had the chance to advance. Gomez converted the next Liverpool kick, and Fofana’s miss ended the contest.

The subsequent draw paired Liverpool with Bournemouth at Anfield. The quarter-final is scheduled for the week beginning December 14, with the exact match date and kickoff still to be confirmed.

That draw creates a meeting between Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola and his former club. It also gives Liverpool another home tie after a night when one goal in normal time was enough to keep their cup campaign alive, provided they could survive the prolonged shootout.
