Fleetwood Knock Arsenal Out of Carabao Cup on Penalties

Lynch and Haughey decide fourth-round tie at Highbury

Fleetwood Town eliminated Premier League champions Arsenal from the Carabao Cup on Tuesday, October 27, winning 5–3 on penalties after a 1–1 draw at Highbury Stadium in Fleetwood. The result, completed early on October 28 in the Philippines, sent the League Two side into the quarter-finals.

Goalkeeper Jay Lynch saved Bruno Guimarães’ fourth penalty for Arsenal before Conor Haughey converted Fleetwood’s fifth. The hosts scored every spot kick, with Lynch’s intervention providing the only failed attempt in the shootout.

Aaron Loupalo-Bi had put Fleetwood ahead in the 21st minute, holding off defender Marli Salmon before beating goalkeeper Illan Meslier. Viktor Gyökeres equalised in the 50th minute after Arsenal introduced Martin Ødegaard and Ben White at half-time.

The visitors could not turn that response into a winning goal. Lynch kept out late efforts from White and Ødegaard, helping Fleetwood survive the pressure and take the tie to penalties. Arsenal also finished with 10 men after Max Dowman was sent off late in the second half for kicking out at an opponent.

Speaking to Sky Sports afterwards, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta said he did not fault his players’ effort or attitude. He pointed instead to their failure to make their possession and chances count on the scoreboard, leaving qualification to the narrow margins of a shootout.

Fleetwood manager Matt Lawlor told the broadcaster that his team had not practised penalties before the match. He praised the players’ execution and explained that their approach against Arsenal had depended on restricting space and limiting options rather than trying to outplay the visitors.

According to the Associated Press, Fleetwood entered the match 18th in League Two, 84 places below Arsenal across the English league system. They had never previously reached the competition’s fourth round, making the victory a further step into unfamiliar territory.

Fleetwood joined Bradford City in the last eight after Bradford beat Peterborough United 2–0. The quarter-final draw was scheduled for Wednesday, October 28, with Fleetwood’s next opponent still to be determined at the time of reporting.
