Madueke’s Late Winner Gives Arsenal 1–0 Victory at Nottingham Forest

A second-half substitute breaks the deadlock

Noni Madueke scored in the 80th minute as Arsenal defeated Nottingham Forest 1–0 at the City Ground on October 18. The substitute’s deflected strike decided a close Premier League contest and kept Arsenal three points behind leaders Manchester City.

Madueke replaced Eberechi Eze at halftime and eventually supplied the breakthrough from the left. He moved inside and shot, with the ball taking a touch off Jair Cunha that wrong-footed goalkeeper Matz Sels. It was Arsenal’s only shot on target of the match, according to Sky Sports.

The visitors had controlled much of the ball without consistently converting possession into clear opportunities. Kai Havertz headed wide before halftime, while Forest’s defensive shape repeatedly limited the space available around the penalty area.

Forest remained a threat after falling behind. Declan Rice blocked Chris Wood’s late effort, Murillo went close and Ezri Konsa intervened to deny Liam Delap in stoppage time. Arsenal therefore needed defensive work as well as Madueke’s contribution to protect the result.

The victory moved Arsenal to 18 points. Forest dropped into the relegation zone and were still waiting for their first home league goal of the campaign, leaving the two clubs with sharply different consequences from the same narrow scoreline.

For Arsenal, the result demonstrates the value of a substitute changing a difficult match, while the limited number of accurate attempts leaves room for improvement in chance creation. Forest can point to their competitiveness, but the absence of a goal meant another home performance ended without a league victory.
