Atlético Madrid Defeat Manchester United 2–0 in Champions League

Barrios gives Atlético an immediate advantage

Atlético Madrid beat Manchester United 2–0 at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano on October 13, with Pablo Barrios scoring in the opening minute and Ademola Lookman adding the second late in the match. The Champions League result was completed early on October 14, Philippine time.

Barrios’s early goal forced United to chase the game almost from kickoff. Atlético thought they had doubled their advantage before halftime through Johnny Cardoso, but that effort was ruled out after a VAR review identified a handball in the build-up.

Both teams later struck the woodwork. Julián Álvarez hit a post for Atlético, while Bruno Fernandes sent an effort against the crossbar as United searched for an equaliser.

United’s task became harder when Leny Yoro was dismissed following a VAR review with 16 minutes of normal time remaining. Lookman then scored in the 79th minute after Senne Lammens saved Jonathan David’s initial attempt.

The second goal gave Atlético a cushion that United could not overturn. Jan Oblak also denied Matheus Cunha a late consolation, preserving the home side’s clean sheet.

The result gave Atlético their first win of this league-phase campaign. United had opened with a 4–0 victory over Sabah but could not build on it in Madrid. Their next European match is away to Como on October 21, with the club’s report also identifying a Premier League visit to Leeds before that fixture.
