Lyon Hold Off Crystal Palace Comeback to Win 3–2 in Europa League

First-half goals give Lyon the platform for victory

Lyon defeated Crystal Palace 3–2 at Groupama Stadium on October 15, holding off two second-half responses from the visitors to secure a UEFA Europa League victory. Corentin Tolisso, Ernest Nuamah and Pavel Šulc scored for the French side.

Palace manager Pierre Sage was returning to his former club, but his team fell behind after eight minutes. Tolisso converted from close range after a corner, giving Lyon an early advantage that Palace could not erase before the break.

Nuamah doubled the lead in first-half added time. Palace’s official match report described the visitors as having no shots on target at halftime, despite some promising moments, and they began the second period needing a sharper attacking response.

Yéremy Pino provided it in the 50th minute, finishing a worked set-piece to reduce the deficit to 2–1. Lyon then restored its two-goal advantage through substitute Šulc in the 76th minute, a decisive intervention after Palace had renewed its pressure.

Daichi Kamada made it 3–2 in the 81st minute with a close-range finish. That left time for a late push, and Chris Richards nearly supplied the equaliser when his header from a corner forced an important save from Lyon goalkeeper Dominik Greif.

Lyon preserved the lead through the closing stages. Palace’s recovery after halftime kept the match alive, but conceding twice before the interval and again after its first reply left it with too much to retrieve on the night.
