Wembanyama Scores 19 as Spurs Beat Shorthanded Suns 123–103

Spurs build their lead in the second quarter

Victor Wembanyama scored 19 points and blocked four shots as the San Antonio Spurs defeated the Phoenix Suns 123–103 at Frost Bank Center on October 14. Stephon Castle added 18 points against a Phoenix team that rested several regulars, including Devin Booker. The game took place on October 15 in Philippine time.

Phoenix led 23–22 after the first quarter, but San Antonio took control with a 38–26 second period. The Spurs entered halftime ahead 60–49 and extended that margin to 92–75 after three quarters. They also won the final period, completing a performance in which their scoring advantage grew throughout the last three quarters.

Wembanyama made nine of 14 field-goal attempts in 23 minutes. He added five rebounds and three assists, giving San Antonio production at both ends despite missing all three of his attempts from beyond the arc. His four blocks accounted for almost half of the Spurs' team total of 10.

Castle found a different route to his 18 points. He made only two of five shots from the floor but converted 14 of 15 free throws. Carter Bryant contributed 16 points, five rebounds and two blocks, hitting four three-pointers. Devin Vassell added 12 points, six rebounds and three steals, while Ja'Kobi Gillespie scored 13.

Ryan Dunn and Jamaree Bouyea each scored 15 for Phoenix. Dunn made all six of his field-goal attempts and all three free throws. Bouyea added eight assists, while Koa Peat and Kennedy Chandler supplied 10 points apiece.

The Spurs finished 30-for-35 at the free-throw line, compared with Phoenix's 12-for-15. San Antonio also made 13 three-pointers to the Suns' seven. Those two areas each produced an 18-point advantage, allowing the Spurs to win comfortably even though Phoenix made two more field goals overall. The result provided useful preseason work for San Antonio's core, although the Suns' absences limit comparisons with a full-strength matchup.
