Orlando adjusts while Banchero undergoes evaluation
The Orlando Magic are preparing for an extended absence for Paolo Banchero after imaging confirmed a low-grade high right-ankle sprain. The injury occurred during the first half of Orlando's October 23 home game against Minnesota, with the team announcing the diagnosis on October 24.
The update remains relevant on October 26 as the Magic begin playing without their leading forward. A four-to-six-week absence has been reported, but that estimate should be distinguished from a firm return date announced by the team. Orlando's statement said Banchero would undergo further testing and evaluation, with his status updated as appropriate.
Banchero had averaged 24.5 points, 6.5 rebounds and 7.5 assists through the opening two games. Those numbers cover only a small early-season sample, but they indicate the scoring and playmaking responsibilities Orlando must redistribute during his absence.
The Magic responded with a 111–102 victory over the Knicks at Madison Square Garden on October 25, US time. Franz Wagner led the comeback, and Jase Richardson started in Banchero's place, according to SNY's game coverage. The result gave Orlando its first win after two opening defeats.
That response offers evidence of the options available to coach Sean Sweeney, without resolving the longer-term challenge. Wagner's increased offensive responsibility and contributions from the rest of the rotation will matter while Banchero remains unavailable.
The injury report and the game result also need to be read separately. Winning in New York does not alter Banchero's medical status, and a recovery estimate does not guarantee that he will be cleared on a particular date. Further team updates will determine when basketball activity and eventual game availability can be confirmed.
