Edgecombe leads Philadelphia’s passing effort
VJ Edgecombe finished with seven assists and no turnovers in the Philadelphia 76ers’ 120–97 preseason victory over the New York Knicks at Xfinity Mobile Arena on October 5 US time, October 6 in the Philippines.
The guard added 12 points and four rebounds in 19 minutes and 31 seconds. His seven assists led Philadelphia and represented nearly a quarter of the team’s 29, giving the Sixers a clear source of creation in a lineup missing several established players.
Edgecombe started alongside Jaylen Brown, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Dean Wade and Ariel Hukporti. Brown supplied the largest scoring total with 22 points, while Edgecombe’s passing offered a separate contribution to the opening group.
His own shooting was mixed. Edgecombe made four of nine field-goal attempts and missed all three of his three-pointers. He nevertheless reached double figures by converting four of five free throws and making four of six attempts inside the arc.
The zero-turnover line is useful because it places the assist total in context. Philadelphia’s individual box-score entries added up to eight turnovers across the full roster, allowing the team to retain a strong balance between creating shots and giving away possessions.
This was a preseason opportunity with LeBron James, Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey absent, so it cannot establish Edgecombe’s eventual share of ballhandling duties. It did show that he could organize productive possessions while contributing points and rebounds during a short starting appearance.
