Minnesota awaits answers after new knee imaging

Minnesota Timberwolves guard Anthony Edwards is scheduled to undergo an arthroscopic procedure on his right knee on Thursday, October 29, US time. Basketball operations president Tim Connelly outlined the decision in Minneapolis on Wednesday, October 28.

Connelly described the operation as a cleanup and said the problem did not involve the meniscus. He declined to set a return date, with a clearer recovery timetable expected after the procedure.

According to Connelly’s comments reported by FOX 9, recent imaging showed a change after Minnesota’s game against Cleveland. The team had monitored Edwards through the summer, but the latest findings prompted it to act. Connelly said the priority was Edwards’ long-term health.

The interruption follows a productive opening stretch. Edwards scored 133 points across Minnesota’s first four games, averaging 33.3, including 47 in Monday’s overtime defeat in Cleveland. His four-game total was a franchise record, according to The Associated Press.

Edwards also dealt with right-knee pain last season, when he appeared in 61 regular-season games. A separate left-knee hyperextension during the playoffs caused a bone bruise and kept him out for two games.

Coach Chris Finch said replacing Edwards’ scoring would require contributions across the roster. LaMelo Ball, Ayo Dosunmu, Terrence Shannon Jr. and Bones Hyland give Minnesota backcourt options, while Donte DiVincenzo remains unavailable following a right Achilles tendon injury.

Connelly said the team did not expect the issue to end Edwards’ season. Minnesota’s next medical update after the operation will determine the recovery outlook; a specific comeback date remains unconfirmed.
