Tottenham Beat Coventry 3–1 for First League Win as Kulusevski Returns

Spurs respond to equaliser and climb out of the bottom three

Tottenham Hotspur secured their first Premier League victory of the season with a 3–1 win over Coventry City in London on October 19, as Dejan Kulusevski returned to competitive action after 526 days out injured. The match finished early on October 20 in the Philippines.

James Maddison, Omar Marmoush and Ben Davies scored for Spurs, who had gone six league matches without a win. The result lifted Roberto De Zerbi’s side from the bottom of the table to 16th, level with Coventry on six points but ahead on goal difference.

Maddison opened the scoring in the 14th minute with a curling finish after Mohammed Kudus created space down the right. It was his first competitive start for Tottenham since May 2025, and it came against the club where he began his professional career.

Coventry responded shortly after half-time through Jack Rudoni, bringing the visitors level and leaving Tottenham facing another test of their ability to protect a lead. Marmoush restored the advantage before the hour with his first goal for the club, finishing into the far corner from the edge of the penalty area.

Kulusevski’s late introduction gave the home supporters another reason to celebrate. His appearance ended an absence stretching back to May 2025, adding a significant player return to an already important result. Davies then made the points secure in the sixth minute of stoppage time after Dominic Solanke laid the ball into his path.

De Zerbi praised his players’ reaction to Coventry’s equaliser in his post-match comments to SPURSPLAY. He acknowledged that Tottenham had struggled to move the ball quickly against the visitors’ compact defence, while highlighting their determination to regain the lead.

The victory gives Spurs an opportunity to build momentum after their difficult start. Their next Premier League assignment is an away match against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, October 24.
